Don't talk about heaven if you've never been to Indonesia. – Toba Beta
Kathy's first trip to Indonesia was in 1993, and she immediately fell in love with the country and its people. Thirty years later, and that love continues to grow with every trip. Year after year, Kathy tells us that her soul is soothed, and her creativity is at its maximum when she's in Indonesia.
Author Anais Nin once said, "Life, religion, and art all converge in Indonesia. They have no word in their language for 'artist,' or 'art.' Everyone is an artist."
The versatility of the artists in Indonesia is unmatched. They can make stunning pieces out of wood, textile, clay, natural stone, silver, and the list goes on. Take our Gamal Root Vases, for instance. Throughout the entire year, one of our most popular items is a root from the Gamal tree that has a molten glass bowl formed to its unique shape. Of course, we are talking about our Gamal Root Vases!
Some of the most sought-after pieces at Birdie's Nest come from Indonesia, from small trinkets to complete furniture sets.
But beyond the products they produce, their people are even more impressive. Warm, welcoming, family-oriented and kind.
To summarize, Kathy says this about Indonesia. "It's more than a place: it's a mood, an aspiration, a tropical state of mind. Artisans steeped in tradition, inspired by their natural surroundings. May your home feel the warm hospitality that is the spirit of Indonesia with our incredible treasures."
Fun Fact: Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world. It consists of five major islands and about 30 smaller groups. There is a total number of 17,508 islands, of which about 6000 are inhabited. (Source: Indonesian Ministry of Trade)
